What to do for severe Tooth Pain Relief

Generally, there are 2 major treatment options available to provide relief from severe tooth pain. Please note there is a general misconception that a filling alone can stop severe tooth pain not it would not. When it comes to treating severe tooth pain, there are typically two common options: a root canal procedure or a tooth extraction. Both of these treatments can effectively relieve severe tooth pain and prevent further damage to the tooth and surrounding tissues, but they differ in their approach and long-term outcomes. With a root canal procedure, sometimes we are able to relieve the pain and restore the health of your tooth, with a tooth extraction you will lose the tooth.

Root canal Procedure for Tooth Pain Relief

One option is a root canal procedure. This involves removing the infected or damaged pulp from the inside of the tooth and replacing it with a filling material. While root canals have a reputation for being painful, modern techniques and anesthesia make the procedure relatively comfortable for most patients. Modern root canal is relatively painless procedure that can save a damaged tooth and alleviate pain. After the root canal, a crown may be placed over the tooth to provide additional protection and restore its function.

What to expect during a Root Canal procedure.

During the procedure, the dentist or endodontist will numb the affected tooth and surrounding area with a local anesthetic. They will then create a small access hole in the top of the tooth to remove the damaged or infected pulp. After the pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and filled with a special material to prevent infection and further decay. Finally, a filling or crown is placed over the treated tooth to provide additional protection and restore its functions.

Root canal Procedure cost

The cost of a root canal procedure can vary depending on several factors, including the location of the tooth, the complexity of the case. Complex cases may need to see an Endodontist for treatment. An endodontist is a dental specialist who is trained in root canal procedures and can provide expert care for complex cases. Endodontist typically charge more than a general dentist. Additional procedure treatments like a crown may also be needed. However, most dental insurance plans cover at least a portion of the cost of a root canal procedure, making it a more affordable option for patients.

Tooth Extraction for Severe Tooth Pain Relief

Another option is an extraction, which involves removing the entire tooth from its socket in the jawbone. While this may seem drastic, it is sometimes necessary if the damage to the tooth is extensive and cannot be repaired with a Root canal and a crown. After the extraction, the tooth can be replaced with a dental implant or Denture or  Dental bridge to restore the function and appearance of your smile.

Wisdom Tooth Pain

Wisdom tooth pain can be a common problem for many people, particularly during young adulthood when the third molars start to emerge or in adulthood when they decay because of lack of access to clean. In many cases, the most effective option for relieving severe tooth pain caused by wisdom teeth is to undergo wisdom tooth extraction. This is because wisdom teeth can cause a range of issues, including overcrowding, impaction, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth or gums so doctors would sometimes recommend that you get them removed for preventative purposes especially if they are impacting an adjacent tooth.

Tooth Extraction Cost

The cost of a tooth extraction can vary depending on several factors, including the location of the tooth, the complexity of the case, and whether additional treatments like a dental implant or bridge are needed. However, most dental insurance plans cover at least a portion of the cost of a tooth extraction, making it a more affordable option for patients.

Filling alone will not provide relief for Severe Tooth Pain

A dental filling is a common restorative dental procedure used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay, wear, or trauma. During a dental filling procedure, the dentist will first remove any decayed or damaged tooth structure but if the nerve is exposed or damaged in anyway, a filling alone will most likely not work because the nerve has to be removed with a Root canal procedure. Severe tooth pain is a sign that the tooth decay is more advanced and has reached the inner layers of the tooth, at this stage, filling alone will not be sufficient to alleviate the pain. In this case, a root canal procedure or tooth extraction may be necessary to treat the underlying issue and provide pain relief.
